Putting the Smartphone Down: Can We Beat Technology Addiction?

Amidst COVID-19, there has been a surge of the use of technologies and screen time in order for us to stay connected to work, school, and personal life. But is there such thing as too much technology use, and when should we intervene to prevent overuse of smartphones, gaming devices, and laptop screens? Dr. Chan will discuss criteria and epidemiology for internet gaming disorder, gambling disorder, and distinguish between addiction and problematic use; review mainstream definitions and concerns of “technology addiction”; and describe ways to address patients’ problematic technology use, including psychotherapy and medication support.
